Gatsby Benchmarks - Success in Careers

The quality of careers delivery in schools is measured by the eight Gatsby benchmarks

The Gatsby Benchmarks are a key measure of the effectiveness of careers advice. They are also a very important part of the Government’s career strategy. The Gatsby Benchmarks are a framework of 8 guidelines that define the best careers provision in schools and colleges.

In 2020-21, The Buckingham school was one of only two schools in the County to achieve all benchmarks.

We regularly measure and assess the impact of our careers guidance programme with the Compass Plus online tracker allows us to see where we are doing well, and where there are gaps; The tracker enables us to record and identify how we are improving our careers education activity against the eight benchmarks of best practice – known as the Gatsby Benchmarks

The benchmarks on which schools are measured are:

  • Benchmark 1 = A stable careers programme
  • Benchmark 2 = Learning from career and labour market information
  • Benchmark 3 = Addressing the needs of each pupil
  • Benchmark 4 = Linking curriculum learning to careers
  • Benchmark 5 =Encounters with employers and employees
  • Benchmark 6 = Experiences of workplaces
  • Benchmark 7 = Encounters with further and higher education
  • Benchmark 8 = Personal guidance

One of the major advances being made this year is in the use of virtual events to ensure students can meet and engage with employers, employees, universities and colleges together with experiences of the work place.

Many thanks to all our partners in ensuring this has been a success.
